Curro, who had to switch high schools mid-term, believes his university life will be different. However, during his first period, everything seems to be the same. People continue to mock his unusual name.
A university story set entirely in northern Mexico.
The teacher instructs the students to introduce themselves and inform the class of their preferred names. For instance, if they have a nickname that people commonly use, they should share it. Curro introduces himself as by his common name and then mentions his nickname.
The entire class erupts in disbelief, their unified reaction a shared gasp of shock. Disbelief and laughter fill the air. It’s true—for his common name, “Curro” is an uncommon nickname. No one, not even the teacher, has heard it before. While it’s unusual in Mexico, it’s not uncommon in other parts of the world. All his life, Curro has grown up with this nickname, and to him, it’s completely normal. But now, much like all his life, people are once again making fun of him for it. Even the teacher can’t help but hide a snicker.
Curro promptly shuts it down-thinking it’s gonna be the same thing all over again.
Later that day, Curro meets Rien. Curro is taking a break on the grassy lawn, enjoying the fresh spring air, when Rien approaches him and mentions that they’re both from the same class. Curro confesses that he’s been feeling down because he genuinely believed that this time would be different.
“I think it’s a pretty name, sounds like an owl don’t you think?”
Curro wasn’t bothered by that comparison and actually enjoyed how Rien didn’t mock him. Rien is also a nickname for his common name. However, people didn’t even raise an eyebrow when he introduced himself. Perhaps it’s his imposing build, which Curro had initially noticed.
And so ~ the story continues and eventually Rien and Curro end up getting married after graduation.
Two years passed and they both been introduced into the daily life of being husband’s.
